How I

LIVE UNITED

My name is Melanie
I’m a case manager for Big Hearts Little Hands, and I have always enjoyed organizing things and working with families.  I was raised by my grandmother who knew the importance of enrolling me in the agencies supported by United Way.  I was a Girl Scout and enrolled in Head Start.  I was a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters from the time I was ten until I was eighteen and they helped me overcome my extreme shyness.  The winter coats I wore were from the same programs supported by community donations to United Way and my school supplies were from the same generous people , as my family did not have the extra money to buy the same things my friends had for school.

I decided I wanted to go to college so I could make the same kind of difference for other people and for my family that others had made for me.  I received a scholarship from another United Way agency, Head Start.  This scholarship allowed me to further my education and continue to grow as a person.  All of these experiences helped to shape my character and made me the person I am today.  I am proud to be a United Way donor and to work in the Indiana County community helping children and families everyday.

Giving back to the community that gave to me……..That’s how I LIVE UNITED.
